Iron sponge process employs iron oxide, which reacts with hydrogen sulfide (H2S) to produce iron sulfide and water. Iron oxide is impregnated on special chips containing other chemical additives to improve the efficiency of removal from solid beds. Iron sponge is a highly efficient adsorbent widely used in gas treatment processes.

Iron sponge as a gas desulfurizer is widely used in oil field natural gas treatment, coke oven gas treatment, environmental protection system, textile, chemical, metallurgy and other fields. The most challenging application, however, is the treatment of oilfield natural gas.
